If summer represents the garden at its most profuse, then autumn offers a final fling and flourish, with glorious leaf and berry colour and sizzling colours from chrysanthemums, dahlias and hydrangeas. In autumn you’ll be picking your final fruit crops – apples, blackberries, redcurrants – as well as the remaining vegetables. Inevitably, autumn also means tidying up. Leaves must be swept up as they fall and plants prepared for the winter ahead. Think, too, about spring bulbs; don’t delay too long in putting them into containers or the ground, ready for a splendid spring display. This season is also suitable for large and small DIY projects. Remember, too, your garden wildlife – make a winter hideaway for hedgehogs and put out food for the birds.
