The six-week holidays can seem like a long time to keep children entertained.
The job of creating action-packed days to occupy young ones can seem like a daunting task to parents, grandparents and caregivers alike…
But there are plenty of fun ideas to keep your little (or big) ones busy this Summer Holiday. We have put together a list of some of our recommendations to create fun-filled days this school holiday, to ensure both adults and kids are amused.
Pick your own fruit
Find a local pick-your-own fruit farm and find what’s in season for you to pick! Bonus points if you use your handpicked fruits in bakes! For more information on picking your own and for recipes to make with your picked fruit, visit our Pick Your Own blog.
Try a new sport together
Get the whole family kitted up and try something new! There is an NHS guide with information on lots of different sports and the benefits of getting moving. Pick one and then search for a place to try your new chosen sport locally.
Attend a fête or fair
Find out when a fair or fête is happening near you and go along! You could even bake or make something to sell to raise money for a good cause. For inspiration, visit our Bakes for Fêtes blog.
Watch the sunrise/sunset
While it may mean a late bedtime or early get-up, watching the sun rise or set is a beautiful way to start or end a day. Make sure to wrap up warm if it’s chilly and take some snacks.
Go for a picnic
Find a scenic spot nearby (or further afield for more of an adventure), pack up a picnic and enjoy the great outdoors! Even better if you make your own picnic snacks! For picnic recipes and picnicking advice, visit our blog here.
Camp at home
You don’t have to travel to have a fun camping experience. Set up tents in the garden and toast marshmallows over a fire (and have a teaching moment about fire safety at the same time)! It’s a great, inexpensive way to feel like you’re on holiday, and is sure to create some good memories to look back on.
Watch for wildlife
Either observe from your own home or go on a walk and see what you can spot. It can be fun to try to identify as many species as you can. For a creative activity after, ask children to draw, paint or recreate their favourite animal that they spied along the walk. Birds can be easily spotted in many people’s gardens, look for birds like Pied Wagtails, Blue Tits and Yellowhammers.
Go Geocaching
Geocaching is a free and fun way to keep you and the kids entertained this summer! It’s like a huge global treasure hunt to find geocaches (cleverly hidden containers) using GPS. All you need is a mobile phone with the official geocaching app downloaded and the spirit of adventure! To gain more information on Geocaching visit our blog, or visit the official Geocaching website.
Become more green thumbed
Incorporate children in cultivating your garden. For more fun, involve them in planting vegetables, fruit or herbs that they can pick themselves later!
Bake!
There’s no better way to spend a morning, afternoon or evening than baking! Kids can get involved in the process and everyone gets a delicious treat out of it! Below are some of our favourite children-friendly recipes for you and your family to try out this summer.
