What fruits and vegetables are at their best in September?

September is a brilliant time for Great British produce. Some summer crops are still productive, and autumn crops start becoming ready-to-eat too. As it starts to cool, autumn makes way for heartier fruit and veg that make delicious, heart-warming dishes.

Whether you are lucky enough to grow your own, you’re foraging for hedgerow goodies, or you are looking for the best seasonal produce at the market or supermarket, autumn is a fantastic season to enjoy an abundance of delicious fruit and vegetables at their very best! The best time of year to pick damsons is at the end of August, going into September. Damsons, like plums, are packed with vitamins and minerals, as well as having a high fibre content – they’re great for you! If you don’t have your own damson tree, you can forage for them in mixed woodland, parks and hedgerows. Damsons can be eaten raw, but have a sweet-sour flavour, and are more commonly cooked or baked into something. A great way to use damsons is in the gin recipe below!
